This practice separates two breathing skills. At rest and during everyday movement, breathe diaphragmatically: let the belly expand 360 degrees around the ribs on the inhale while keeping the chest and shoulders still, which signals the parasympathetic nervous system to stay calm and releases chronic tension in the abdomen and back. Under real training load, switch to exhaling on the effort (the concentric phase, like standing up from a deadlift or pressing a bench), which creates just enough intra-abdominal bracing for the demand, unlike a full breath-holding Valsalva maneuver that over-tenses submaximal lifts. The same principle extends to everyday movement most people unconsciously breath-hold through: bending to tie shoes, picking things off the floor, even using the bathroom. Learning to breathe through these moments instead of bracing against them reduces the chronic tension that shows up as stiffness, poor sleep, and even snoring.

Sema traces his own interest in diaphragmatic breathing to watching Rickson Gracie demonstrate diaphragmatic waves, plus Patrick McKeown's 'The Oxygen Advantage,' after years of unexplained lower-back pain that traditional training couldn't resolve.

How to run it

Test your current breathing pattern
Lie on your back with knees bent, one hand on your chest and one on your stomach, and take a deep breath. Notice whether your chest/shoulders rise or your stomach expands.

Practice belly-first diaphragmatic breathing at rest
Breathe so your stomach and obliques expand 360 degrees while your chest and shoulders stay still. Practice this deliberately several times a day, e.g. first thing in the morning or before a podcast/meeting.
Pro tip Leave a physical note somewhere you frequent (desk, mirror) to trigger a breathing check.

Apply inhale-down, exhale-up to everyday lifting
When picking something off the floor, inhale as you lower into position and exhale as you stand back up, exhaling on the exertion rather than holding your breath.
Pro tip This is the same pattern boxers use when exhaling sharply on a punch instead of holding their breath.
Watch out Do not experiment with a new breathing pattern during a near-maximal lift; practice it first on light, everyday movements.

Reserve breath-holding bracing for true maximal loads
Use the full Valsalva maneuver, inhaling and holding to brace the spine, only when the load genuinely demands maximal stability, not for every rep of every submaximal set.
Watch out Chronically over-bracing submaximal loads creates more tension than the movement requires and carries that tension into the rest of your day.

Notice breath-holding in non-training movement
Bring awareness to moments you unconsciously hold your breath: bending down, tying shoes, using the bathroom, and consciously breathe through them instead.
In the wild
After years of unexplained pain on the right side of his lower back that no soft-tissue specialist could fix, Sema built a consistent rope flow and breath-awareness practice; within weeks the pain stopped recurring.
→ Chronic lower-back pain resolved and did not return.
Sema consciously did ten deep diaphragmatic breaths before bed one night to see if it reduced his snoring, as an informal self-test of the practice's carryover into sleep.
→ Result was inconclusive on that single night (he still snored), illustrating that the habit needs weeks of repetition, not one session, to shift an ingrained pattern.
Common mistakes
Applying a new breath pattern under max load
Sema explicitly warns against testing new breathing techniques during near-maximal lifts since it's an easy way to get injured; build the pattern on light loads first.
Over-bracing every rep like it's maximal
Using full Valsalva breath-holding on light or moderate loads creates more tension than the movement needs and that excess tension follows you through the rest of the day.
Is it for you?
Best for
Lifters who over-brace on submaximal loads, and anyone with chronic tension, poor sleep quality, or a habit of holding their breath during ordinary movement.
Not ideal for
The moment of a genuine near-maximal lift, where full Valsalva breath-holding bracing is actually the safer technique.
